In 1993, the Islip Art Museum opened the Carriage House as a project space where contemporary artists can create and exhibit new and experimental work. Since its first season, the Carriage House has steadily expanded its programming and services to become a major cultural resource in the greater New York region.

Built in 1910, the Carriage House is one of the few remaining examples of Edwardian shingle architecture at the turn of the century. The 10,000 square foot structure is located next door to the Islip Art Museum galleries in Brookwood Hall, East Islip, New York, approximately 50 miles from Manhattan on the south shore of Long Island. The building's grace and historic architectural detail make it a perfect foil for contemporary and cutting edge art. The rustic interior allows artists great freedom of design, choice of medium and latitude in installation. Work which cannot be situated in more formal galleries and museums because of technical considerations are frequently accepted at the Carriage House.

The Islip Art Museum offers a variety of exhibitions and studio programs at the Carriage House, including Projects, an exhibition of installations by emerging artists who are selected from an annual call for proposals. For information on submitting material for the Projects program, which includes a two to three-week summer residency, click on Application and Viewing. A floor plan of the Carriage House is also available on this website.

Winter studios are available at the Carriage House from February through April. Artists wishing to be considered for the Winter Studio Program should send a brief letter of intent to the Islip Art Museum describing their current work and why the use of a large studio will benefit them. A letter of intent should be accompanied by a resume and up to 20 images. Include the words "Winter Studio Program" on the front of your envelope. Applications are due December 1 of each year.

All Carriage House programs include artists' stipends, staff support and technical assistance.

The staff of the Carriage House welcomes inquiries from artists concerning workspace and exhibition programs. Curators review slides and CD's on a monthly basis. Please do not send images by e-mail as they will not be opened or acknowledged.
