Application Guidelines

Each year, the Islip Art Museum invites artists to submit proposals for installations in the Carriage House. The yearly deadline for submissions is April 15. Proposals are reviewed by a panel of artists and gallery and museum professionals, and selected works are exhibited in August through October. Artists receive fees and technical support.

Our staff is happy to discuss your proposal and application. Please call during museum hours - Monday through Friday, 9 a.m - 4 p.m. if you have any questions or concerns.

It is strongly advised that you attend an Artist's Open House and visit the Carriage House in person. You can see the Floor Plan for a general layout of the interior and in order to select your gallery preference.

Your application must contain the following:

1. Our Application Form which contains your personal information, including name, address, city, state, zip code, and telephone number. Be sure to include your social security number.

2. On your application form, indicate your first, second and third gallery preference. You must indicate a room. Select your gallery from the floor plan of the Carriage House on the next page of this site.

3. An updated copy of your resume, including your background and artistic achievements.

4. Provide a detailed written proposal describing your concept. Limit this description to a single page.

5. Provide a detailed project budget, which includes income and expenses. Your project will not be judged on your budget, but this material will be reviewed to assess the feasibility of your proposal.

6. On an 8 1/2" x 11" sheet of paper, submit an informal sketch of the way your work will look when installed. A copy of this sketch should be included in every collated package. In addition to your sketch, submit no more than 8 visuals of your proposed work. Visuals may include slides, Xerox copies or laser prints. Video material (VHS or DVD) is acceptable but can be no longer than 2 minutes, cued to your starting point. You may submit a combination of these materials. The purpose of your visual materials is to convey your artistic intention to the review panel as clearly as possible. The limit on materials should not be exceeded even in the case of collaborative proposals. Due to technical problems, we can not accept disks or CDs, but we can accept audios in CD format.

7. Submit no more than 4 representations of your previous work.

8. Provide a visual materials check list keyed to the materials you submit. Clearly label which materials are past and which are proposed.

About assembling your proposal package:

1. Please provide eight (8) copies of all material except slides, CD's and videos. If you submit drawings or prints as visual material, you must provide 8 copies. These copies are distributed to panel members. We can not Xerox copies of your proposal for you. Please make sure each of the eight packets are collated.

2. Visual materials must be clearly labeled with the artist's name, title of work, medium and dimensions. Slides should also indicate top, and be sent in a clear plastic sleeve. Videos must be cued to starting point. Please do not send original or one-of-a-kind material. The Museum does not assume responsibility for lost or damaged material and cannot guarantee return. Only slides, CD's and videos will be returned. We will not return proposal packets.

3. Do not propose more than one installation or project. The panel will only look at one.

4. Send only the requested materials. All other materials, such as catalogues or essays, will be discarded.

5. In order to avoid potential conflicts of interest, please refrain for contacting panel members directly. Your proposal may be disqualified if you do. You may contact the museum staff with questions.

6. Proposals must be postmarked by April 15. We will not accept material with a later postmark. It is suggested that you ask for a receipt in order to assure yourself that we received your package. Be sure to include a self-addressed, stamped return envelope with your proposal package.
